And the bat boys just take turns passing you off in the middle of the sky like you weigh like a grain of rice to them until they reach the meadow in between the mountains where they have a little picnic set up for you. As queer women, we talk a lot about personality meaning more than looks.

I feel that calling someone a ‘jump scare’ is kind of harsh.

As somebody with body image and self confidence issues… I would certainly hate to be referred to as the ‘jump scare’ that my attractive partner was dating.

We should do better. As long as people are happy and safe in healthy relationships… we should support them, I think.

I don’t mean to start an argument or anything. I just think we should be nicer.

And that's a wonderful sentiment to say, but two things.

1. Have you ever, for one second, taken a look at how men speak about women online? How absolutely unfiltered in their misogyny, sexism, sexualization, and pure hatred they can be on a WIDE scale? It's not a few bad apples, it's literally everywhere. I'm not saying two wrongs make a right, but I'm also not gonna sit here and feel terrible for making a joke on my personal blog about pretty women getting with ugly man, especially when I'm saying it as a broad observation rather than a personal attack - and it's an observation which I am not the first to point out.

2. I'm genuinely sorry you have body image issues. I do too. Most people do, especially women, considering the society that we live in. A society that by and large tells women they have to be thin but also thicc but not too thicc, they have to be gorgeous and dolled up but also not too dolled up because then they're vain. They have to be smart but not too smart, confident but not too confident. Have the exact right boobs and lips and tummy and thighs and the exact right shaped hips. Alllllll while pushing this coinciding narrative of 'dad bods' and nerdy lanky boys and grungy guys and so on. Men who literally don't even wipe their asses well enough to not leave streaks in their underwear are made of fun of but get a pass 🤨 The standards are split inequitably, and women are held to standard of conventional beauty to a degree and prevalence that men never are, so if the worst thing that happens to a guy's ego is that some niche lesbian fandom blogger calls them ugly in a shitpost, then they're still having a great day compared to the messaging that most women face every single time they open any app out there.

Just an afterthought as well, I literally said that looks mean nothing in the grand scheme of things AND I said if they're a wonderful partner who treats them well then obviously that's the best person for them, because again, looks don't matter. Please, don't try to police me on my own blog. Ugh it pains me how long this has been sitting in my inbox because it might have been years and this topic is somehow still relevant. I really did not expect fat acceptance/body positivity to live this long. This entire movement is built on women's insecurities with their weight and the insistence that it doesn't impact their health negatively was the ad hoc justification for it. Seriously, almost everyone in that movement is female and it's not coincidental. They think that trying to change the beauty standard would be easier than losing the excess weight but it's backfiring. The thicc BBL era is over and skinny is making a comeback through the rise of Y2K fashion. Mayor celebrities like Kim K and Ice Spice are losing weight and getting their BBL reversed (probably better for their health tbh) and the body positivity movement can't handle it. They even turned on Lizzo for losing weight. Our stupid culture cannot ever land in a healthy middle and always needs to push an extreme body to capitalise off it and I wish the conversation were more about that instead of fighting for your body shape to become the new current fashion trend. These trends never last more than 10 years so that victory was destined to not be a permanent victory. The permanent victory could have been the path to a healthy diet and lifestyle regardless of current fashion trends

Some fun facts: Diana (t. sinensis) is the biggest mantis i've ever had. She was about the size of my entire hand, and used to chase a laser pointer around on my bed! Mantises are solo, binocular predators, and so behave very similarly to cats, in much the same way jumping spiders are said to resemble mammalian movement and behaivior. Bandit (p. paradoxa) is the green ghost mantis in all of these images, was a tripod, we didn't know if she'd make it because early on she lost an arm (one armed bandit), but I got her through a few more molts and she eventually grew that leg back entirely. She loved eating honey straight out of my hand. Banshee & Casper (p. paradoxa) are male and female, and parents of Bandit!! Most of their children went to loving homes, but we kept bandit. Casper had thicc gold-tan antennae that he always kept straight up like this looong crown. He always kind of reminded me of an eldritch king. Thessaly (b. mendica)'s wings turned out curled for her final molt, and I was never sure why. Maybe she didn't like the humidity, but I think her wings are beautiful either way, and since I got her food for her she didn't really need them.

Beauty standards and its relation to racism and colourism

I am a film junkie and I adore Japanese films. My love for Japanese films started when I watched a specific movie, which just so happens to be one of the most breathtaking films I’ve ever watched in my life - Helter Skelter. Helter Skelter is a movie that tells the story of a famous actress, Lilico, who has had several cosmetic procedures over her body. Lilico makes life terrible for people around her as she struggles to manage both her professional and personal issues as a result of the adverse effects of her surgery (Letterboxd 2012). It is based on a manga that Kyoko Okazaki wrote and released between 1995 and 1996 (Cherif 2022). The message of the movie is made clear to be depicting the extent we can go to achieve what we deem as "perfect beauty", but how it can lead to an unhealthy obsession with our physical appearance. Throughout the film, the audience will witness Lilico’s fall into an endless, abyssal spiral of depression as she tries to fix the side effects of surgery with, well, even more surgery.

Beauty standards in every culture look different. In the West, the hourglass figure (otherwise known as “slim thicc”) is the goal! Some features that are commonly celebrated and strived for in Western countries are light-coloured eyes, blonde hair, pale skin and small noses. The beauty standard in Asia also has a similar standard but skinny is what most people go for. Obviously, Asians do not have the same genetics as Westerners. If someone frequently consumes beauty content from Western culture, they may be influenced to change their features in some way in order to fit what they think is the “standard of beauty”. Some may think beauty standards are merely just guidelines for people to follow to be seen as more attractive, but I think it goes much deeper than that.

I believe beauty standards are built on the foundation of racism and colourism, discrimination or prejudice towards those with dark complexion. You might think it’s a stretch but hear me out. A good example of this is when we discuss skin tones. Have you ever thought to yourself “Man, my skin is so dark” or “Man, I wish I had a more pale complexion”? Why are we so scared of getting a little tan from the sun? Why do we immediately deem darker skin = undesirable? As a Chinese, why are bigger eyes and double eyelids more adored than mono or hooded lids despite it being the most common outcome for our ethnicity? All these questions point to an underlying distorted perception that we were taught since young and continue to experience in our daily lives. They take the form of seemingly harmless little statements, like when the aunt that nobody likes asks you if you’re going to keep eating those pineapple tarts during Chinese New Year, or when your beautician mentions how perfect you’d look if you just got a little nose lift during your monthly visit to the beauty salon.

All in all, there is no such thing as “perfect beauty” as the definition of it is so different for every single person, everyone has their own version of beauty. Aiming to achieve it is unrealistic and will not only cost you millions of dollars, but also endless amounts of mental strain. I understand that it is easy to fall into the rabbit hole that is insecurity and anxiety over appearances and our bodies. But something I truly believe is that without our body, no matter what it looks like, we will not exist. Your body is constantly trying to take care of itself and we should be grateful for having two arms and two legs, functioning ears and nose, eyes to see the world and a mouth to taste Kyochon fried chicken (yes, I am craving it as I am writing this). To end this, I’d like to dedicate a poem I wrote for an e-book about self-acceptance and to love our body because it is trying its best to keep us alive every day.

okay here I go. I had the time to sit with the discussion in the fandom about Big Daddy Elvis (or thicc daddy, whatever lol). and these are my thoughts.

there's a lot of you in the Elvis fandom that think that those of us that find Elvis attractive during the later portion of the 70s are "fetishizing" his illness. some of you guys think it's immortal and wrong that some of us find the man good looking at that point in his life. and some of you guys chastise others on how despicable they are for even daring to think Elvis was hot at that phase in his life.

first of all. why are you infantilizing a grown man in his 40s, as if he was rendered fucking helpless and bedridden unable to move and incapable of doing anything for himself? as if he needed around the clock care, like he was a patient in a hospital dying of some horrendous, inoperable or incurable disease? as if he wasn't a grown ass man who lived his life and was up and walking around living his usual routine until the last breath he took? it makes no fucking sense to me.

i think everyone is privy to the obvious fact that Elvis was sick. we get that. we are not overlooking that. and we are not fetishizing his illness. what the hell is up with that bogus take? the man gained some weight and had water retention. are you to imply that we can't find overweight people attractive? are you to imply that people who are sick are incapable of being looked at as a human being with human needs? the man had a girlfriend in Ginger Alden at that time and he was STILL getting women in that phase in his life. are you going to ridicule those women for daring to find the man hot?

as if for some reason, Elvis being sick rendered him as this manchild that needed a wetnurse instead of a loving girlfriend or wife who wanted to be with him sexually, emotionally, spiritually, and mentally?

some of you out there in the fandom seem to think that we must be horrible people for looking at Elvis in that phase of his life saying "omg big daddy elvis is so hot" as if we're the devil or something. like, how dare we find that man even remotely attractive. i can guarantee you anything that elvis would not want to be patronized and looked down upon as this poor helpless, innocent babyboy that didn't have needs just like the rest of us. newsflash, Elvis was a sexually charged man and he was still getting some at the end of his life. whether that makes some of you upset, that's not my problem to deal with. that's just a fact.

he was the most beautiful man to probably ever walk the face of the earth. even with his illness at the end, he was beautiful. and he had an even more beautiful soul that shined through everything. it doesn't matter what someone looks like, or what illnesses they go through. people that are sick are STILL HUMANS WITH HUMAN NEEDS AND DESIRES. do NOT infantilize him. and you need to look up the meaning to the word "fetishizing" because that's not what we're doing here.

how about we stop rendering that 40-something year old man as a baby who needed mommy and daddy to coddle him, and see him for what he is. he was a man that made mistakes. and im sure he had regrets. but he was a gorgeous man with a loving soul. and if we truly LOVE Elvis like we claim we do, then we love and accept him with all of his flaws.

He’s happy to work under someone else. To be Astrid’s right hand, the one she knew would never betray her because she’s always known he just genuinely doesn’t mind taking direction

He likes having a larger and more powerful force around - it’s kinda a prerequisite when bonding with gods

While Astrid and Bren (and still Caleb frankly) chafe and plot and conspire whenever they see something stronger than them, and make plans in case they have to beat it

Astrid and Caleb are both just… functionally about control. Neither of them have it in the context of Trent, and they’re both adamant that they’ll fix that at all costs

Even Caleb’s plan to fix the empire by taking down the Cerberus Assembly is very fundamentally about retaking control of his own life, and his home, so he personally can make sure what happened to him never happens again

Astrid plots to murder her way through anyone necessary to get a seat on the Cerberus Assembly because she thought that was the peak of control; being the one in charge, on top of the world where she couldn’t be ordered around anymore

(And. Well. We see how that went for her. And we see how she’s dealing with it. With more murderplots.)

And control is actually one of the most fundamental things humans crave! Before babies can talk, they’ll visibly react to being able to do things like clap to turn their mobiles on

Especially in people who’ve experienced trauma, needing to be in control of every situation isn’t just a preference, it can be a physical need and make you sick

It makes perfect sense that Astrid and Caleb are so driven for control

Because neither of them have anyone else that they really, fully trust to take care of them and make them do the right things

And Eadwulf does. He trusts Astrid, and he trusts the Matron to steer him right and take care of the details

And, just like Caduceus’ unending faith in the Wildmother, that lets him be pretty blase about basically anything else that ever happens ever
